FOCUS
Focus is one of the six keys that I teach when giving lessons to students,
the second key is the importance of body language and the third key is
intention. The fourth is feel. I want to group these all together as they
run hand in hand.
When you use your body language around your horse in a specific way he will be reading the intention that you also have in place, so you cannot grow tall and put a firm look on your face when you are asking him to move if you are thinking of something else, talking to someone else or not really worried about whether you get the result or not, you need to be fully focussed and aware of what it is you want to acheive and have that intention firmly in your mind and it then transmits into your body for the horse to pick up.
If you are asking your horse to move over and you alter your body language and intention to let him know, you also need to put the appropriate feel through your hand, did you ask politely first or did you go in with too hard a touch which actually caused more of a brace? The feel that you offer your horse not only gains you respect but gives you softness, they are so responsive to touch that even a fly can be felt, this is the sort of lightness we can achieve, with the right Focus, body language, intention and feel.
Try experimenting with this and see how lightly your horse can move for you on the ground when you set it up for success!
